New Shipper Technology Introduced at Biotec

Volumetric weight cost savings and improved temperature stability

As a specialist in the cold chain supply of Pharmaceuticals, Biotec Services International Ltd is always seeking to give its customers the most secure and cost effective shipping solution for their cool and frozen shipments. Over the past year there have been a number of shipping systems launched on the market which use active and phase change cooling systems to control the temperature of shipments, rather than relying on cool and frozen blocks within polystyrene shippers.

Active Cooling System 2-8°C

The system works by evaporation of a small amount of water within the shipper lid. Evaporation under such conditions creates a cooling effect seven times greater than conventional gel packs. This enables the shipper to maintain 2-8°C more effectively than standard shippers. In addition there is no requirement for frozen gel packs within the system, therefore minimising the risk of the shipment freezing. The shippers have a much smaller external dimension compared to the equivalent conventional shipper.

Phase Change Shippers -20°C

These shippers use phase change technology to maintain the product at the correct temperature within the shipper. The phase change panels are designed to change from solid to liquid or liquid to solid at different temperatures. This enables the shipper to be configured to the temperature range required.  The shippers use high quality insulation panels to protect against the outside ambient temperature giving a very stable internal temperature. Testing of these shippers has shown that transit times of 96 hours are achievable within the temperature specification of -15 to -25°C. In addition to the long transit times, the shippers are smaller and lighter than the conventional shippers and therefore have a lower shipping cost. The shippers are reusable and can be packed flat for return. Biotec will arrange collection of the shippers, therefore saving the receiver the cost of packaging disposal.
